How to import CSV bank transactions into QuickBooks Desktop
Short answer: QuickBooks Desktop (Pro, Premier, Enterprise, including 2024) has no import for bank-transaction CSV files. Intuit's own community answers confirm it. You need to turn the CSV into a Web Connect (.QBO) file or an IIF file first – or type the transactions in.

Why the CSV import is missing
QuickBooks Desktop imports CSV/Excel only for lists (customers, vendors, items, chart of accounts). Bank transactions come in through Bank Feeds, which accepts only Direct Connect or Web Connect .qbo files. Intuit's help page on bank feeds also notes that QFX and QIF (Quicken) files do not work in Web Connect.
Option 1: convert the CSV to a Web Connect (.QBO) file
This is the best route for bank and credit-card accounts, because the transactions land in the Bank Feeds Center where you match and categorise them, and QuickBooks remembers each transaction ID (FITID) so the same line is not downloaded twice.
- Export the CSV from online banking (or build it in Excel with Date, Description and Amount columns).
- Convert it to
.qbowith a converter. In Ledgermere: open the CSV, check the column mapping (date, description, amount or debit/credit), then export QBO. - In QuickBooks Desktop: Banking › Bank Feeds › Import Web Connect Files, choose the file, and pick the existing account (or create it).
- Review the transactions in the Bank Feeds Center and add/match them.
QuickBooks checks the bank ID (INTU.BID) inside a QBO file. Converters use a common default (3000 in Ledgermere, editable). If QuickBooks refuses the file, try the BID of your own bank – see QFX/OFX to QBO.
Option 2: build an IIF file
IIF is Intuit's older tab-separated import format. It writes transactions straight into the register (no Bank Feeds review, no duplicate check), so back up the company file first. Steps: File › Switch to Single-user Mode, then File › Utilities › Import › IIF Files. Each transaction needs a TRNS line, at least one SPL line and ENDTRNS, and the amounts must balance. Our IIF format guide shows a working example.
Use IIF when you need to post to a specific expense/income account directly, e.g. a year of historical data you have already categorised.
Option 3: enter the transactions by hand
For a dozen lines, typing them in the register (Banking › Use Register) is quicker than any conversion. Beyond that it becomes error-prone.
Which option should you choose?
| Web Connect (.QBO) | IIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Review before posting | Yes (Bank Feeds Center) | No |
| Duplicate protection | Yes, by transaction ID | No |
| Posts to expense/income accounts directly | Via bank rules / matching | Yes |
| Undo | Delete from Bank Feeds before adding | Restore a backup |
Common problems
- "Can't verify the financial institution" – the BID in the QBO file is not accepted; change it to your bank's.
- Dates off by a month – the CSV used day/month order and was read as month/day. Check the date format before exporting.
- Signs reversed on a credit card – card CSVs often show purchases as positive. Ledgermere has a flip sign option for card files.
- Transactions already downloaded – Intuit notes you can't download the same transactions into a company file twice; a QBO with the same transaction IDs will be skipped.
Try it with your own file. Ledgermere converts PDF/CSV/Excel statements, OFX/QFX/QBO, QIF, MT940, camt.053, BAI2 and Norma 43 to QBO, QFX, IIF, QuickBooks Online CSV, Xero CSV, OFX, QIF, CSV or Excel – in your browser, nothing is uploaded. The free version exports the first 20 transactions so you can test the import first; a 30-day pass is $9, lifetime $29.
