What is a QBO file, and how do you open one?
A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file: a bank or credit-card transaction download meant for QuickBooks. Inside it is plain OFX text – so you can read it without QuickBooks.

Two different things called “QBO”
People use “QBO” for two unrelated things:
- .qbo files – Web Connect transaction files that banks offer as “QuickBooks download”. This page is about these.
- QBO = QuickBooks Online, Intuit's web product. A “QBO file” in that sense usually means your online company data, which you can't download as a single file.
A .qbo file is also not a QuickBooks company file. Company files are .QBW (working file), .QBB (backup) and .QBM (portable); those need QuickBooks Desktop.
What is inside a .qbo file
Open one in Notepad or TextEdit and you will see an OFX header followed by tags such as:
<STMTTRN> <TRNTYPE>DEBIT <DTPOSTED>20260114 <TRNAMT>-42.50 <FITID>20260114001 <NAME>HARDWARE STORE </STMTTRN>
Plus the account number, currency, the statement period, often a ledger balance, and an Intuit-specific bank ID (<INTU.BID>) that QuickBooks uses to recognise the bank.
How to open a QBO file without QuickBooks
- Text editor – fine for a quick look at a few transactions.
- Rename to .ofx – some personal-finance apps (e.g. GnuCash, Moneydance) import OFX. Results depend on how strict the app is.
- Convert to Excel or CSV – open the file in Ledgermere and export Excel or CSV. You get date, payee, memo, amount, type and the bank's transaction ID per row, and several .qbo files can be merged with duplicates removed.
Importing a QBO file into QuickBooks
- Desktop: Banking › Bank Feeds › Import Web Connect Files.
- Online: Bank transactions › Link account ▾ › Upload from file. Intuit lists .qbo among the accepted types (up to 1,000 lines and 350 KB per upload).
If the bank only gives you CSV, PDF or Quicken QFX, you can convert CSV to QBO, PDF to QBO or QFX to QBO.
Try it with your own file. Ledgermere converts PDF/CSV/Excel statements, OFX/QFX/QBO, QIF, MT940, camt.053, BAI2 and Norma 43 to QBO, QFX, IIF, QuickBooks Online CSV, Xero CSV, OFX, QIF, CSV or Excel – in your browser, nothing is uploaded. The free version exports the first 20 transactions so you can test the import first; a 30-day pass is $9, lifetime $29.
Questions and answers
Is a QBO file the same as a QFX file?
Almost: both are OFX inside. QFX is the Quicken flavour and QBO the QuickBooks flavour; the main difference is the header and the Intuit bank ID. QuickBooks Desktop does not accept QFX in Web Connect.
Can I convert a QBO file to PDF?
Convert it to Excel first, then print or save the sheet as PDF.
Can I edit a QBO file?
Yes, in a text editor, but one broken tag makes QuickBooks reject it. It is safer to convert to Excel, edit, and export a new QBO.
