Quicken won't import a QFX file: causes and fixes

When Quicken refuses a .qfx file, the cause is almost always inside the file: the bank ID, a malformed date range or an account mismatch. Quicken's own troubleshooting points to the file rather than to Quicken settings.

1. “Unable to verify the financial institution”

Quicken checks the Intuit bank ID (<INTU.BID>) and the <FI> block against its list of supported banks. If the bank changed its ID, or the file comes from a converter using a generic ID, Quicken refuses it. Fixes: re-add the account using the bank's current name in Quicken; or edit the BID (keep a copy of the original file). In Ledgermere the bank ID of QFX/QBO exports can be set before exporting.

2. Malformed dates or headers

Quicken community posts describe imports failing because of broken DTSTART/DTEND values or a damaged OFX header. Open the file in a text editor: dates should look like 20260114 or 20260114120000. Report a broken bank export to the bank.

3. Wrong account or account type

A credit-card QFX (CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1) can't go into a checking account and vice versa. Make sure you pick an account of the same type, or let Quicken create a new one.

4. Nothing new imported

Quicken matches transaction IDs (FITIDs). Lines it has already seen are skipped. That's a feature – but a converter that generates new IDs every time would create duplicates, so Ledgermere derives stable IDs from the transaction content.

5. Check your computer's date and Quicken subscription

Quicken's Web Connect troubleshooting also suggests checking the system date.

When you only have CSV, PDF or OFX

Quicken for Windows doesn't import plain OFX or PDF. Convert the file to QFX: open it in Ledgermere, review the transactions, export QFX, then use File › File Import › Web Connect (.QFX) File.

Try it with your own file. Ledgermere converts PDF/CSV/Excel statements, OFX/QFX/QBO, QIF, MT940, camt.053, BAI2 and Norma 43 to QBO, QFX, IIF, QuickBooks Online CSV, Xero CSV, OFX, QIF, CSV or Excel – in your browser, nothing is uploaded. The free version exports the first 20 transactions so you can test the import first; a 30-day pass is $9, lifetime $29.

Questions and answers

Can I rename an .ofx file to .qfx?

Sometimes, but Quicken still needs the Intuit bank ID inside the file. Converting writes the right header.

Error OL-221 / OL-220 – is that the file?

Those OL errors are usually about online connections (Direct Connect / Express Web Connect), not file imports. Quicken has a support article for them.
